An airplane is flying at a speed of 350 mi/h at an altitude of one mile and passes directly over a radar station at time t=0.

(a) express the horizontal distance d (in miles) that the plane has flown as a function of t.

(b) express the distance s between the plane and the radar station as a function of d.

(c) use composition to express s as a function of t.

(a) Horizontal distance is just horizontal velocity times time.
D = 350t.

(b) Draw a triangle. He’s 1 mile over the station, and always 350t miles away from it. The hypotenuse, his distance away from it, is given by,
S = sqrt(122500t^2 + 1)

(c) S = sqrt(D^2 + 1).

d = 350t

s = (d^2 + 1)^.5

s = ((350t)^2 + 1)^.5
