It is harder to shoot good digital photos of moving objects than of still objects. When objects are still you have all the time that you need to focus on the object and set the other camera parameters like shutter speed and aperture. This time shortens as the objects in the frame move faster and faster.

An example of moving objects that you might be photographing is a runner in a race, a racecar in a racing event or a jet fighter in an air show. The closer you are to those moving objects the faster they appear to be moving relative to your position and the faster they move the less time you have to set the camera and shoot the digital photo. For example if you are really far from a racecar during a race you have more time to take the photo than if you are virtually on the track and the car is heading your way.

There are many aspects to shooting good moving objects photos. In this article we will only look at one: focusing on the object. Other parameters such as shutter speed and aperture are explained in other articles. When objects are in focus digital photos look sharp and crisp when objects are out of focus they look unclear and blurry.

With low-end pocket cameras you do not have much choice when it comes to focusing. The camera will make its best effort to focus on the objects and there is little control for you as the photographer to guarantee the results. Semi-professional photographer are more likely to use SLR digital cameras with zoon lenses when taking photos of moving objects in scenarios like those described above. When using such equipment you can take advantage of a focusing mode known as Continuous Focus.

In Continuous Focus mode the camera continuously focuses on the objects in the photo. Once the shutter button is pressed and as long as it is held half way down the camera continuously focuses on the objects in the photo. The camera continuously corrects the focus as the objects distance from the camera changes.

When using this mode to shoot photos of moving objects you should hold the shutter button half way down and continuously move the camera to follow the objects. The camera will continuously keep the objects in focus. When you are ready to shoot the photo simply press the shutter button all the way down. By continuously correcting the focus the camera guarantees that it is always ready to shoot the photo when you feel the composition is right. For example you can use this mode to track an airplane in an air show and take the photo exactly when the composition is right maybe when another bigger and slower airplane is visible making the digital photo composition more impressive.

This mode is not free of drawbacks. One drawback is the associated high power consumption as the camera continuously corrects the focus it uses the power hungry motors in the lens in order to move the optical components back and forth. Another drawback is the need to keep the objects in focus in a specific area of the frame that the camera focuses on limiting the composition options – usually this area is in the center of the frame.

I wanted to challenge myself and fly at a new spot. I found a small park that I thought I could take-off & land from. Unfortuatly the battery fell out mid-flight, so I never really did land. Luckily I found NYC’s Bravest for some help out of the tree. And the camera was rolling the entire time!

Plenty of turbine-powered radio controlled model action at another meeting of the New Zealand Jet Modeler’s Association at the Tokoroa airfield.

Just some of the action from a weekend that was yet another example of the best and worst weather this country has to offer.

Recently I read a magazine article about how my friend and fellow longtime model builder Eric Meyers was able to fly 50 different airplanes in one day using his JR 12X transmitter and a bunch of really nice airplanes. Im thinking that most of us dont have 50 airplanes. But I do (we might) have a Spektrum DX6i and I do have 10 sport flyer type airplanes. I think I can fly all 10 of them during my lunch hour. There are a variety of different types of models including a flying wing, a sailplane, a ducted fan jet, aerobatic models and a helicopter. The DX6i has the built-in capability needed to handle all these different setups. With the 10-model memory, each model has its own unique setup and trim settings so I can easily switch from one model to the other and with the DSM2 ModelMatch feature I will not have to worry whether I have the correct model memory selected.

Watch this video and see how well the DX6i works for sport modelers who are having fun with their airplanes but still need the features usually only found in high-end, more expensive, radios. Why dont you try it—it was definitely fun, and certainly something you can do yourself.

All models utilize the servo reverse, sub trim and travel adjustment features in the DX6i.

DX6i features used in these models:

Dual Aileron Servos Except for the sailplane, all models used two aileron servos.

Dual Aileron AND Dual Elevator Servos Ducted Fan F-16

Elevons Flying Wing with electronic wing type mix for left and right elevon servos.

Dual Flight modes The helicopter has Normal and Aerobatic flight modes; the sailplane has Climb (power on) and Soaring flight modes (both are switch-activated)

Dual Rates The aerobatic airplanes use rudder, elevator and aileron dual rates on individual switches (can be assigned to one switch pilots choice).

Separate Throttle and Pitch curves with multi-point settings The helicopter uses all of the features required for a 3D aerobatic helicopter

This is what got Justin Jee(Chi) http://www.JustinJee.com stated on his love of flying RC. He was bugging me to fly the sim while I was trying to learn 3D flying. I basically left the box with him to get him off my back. This was before he turned 2. One day, I discovered that he was making a cordinated turn. The rest is history. You can read about the process in detail here http://alturl.com/md2k

Please read about it at http://www.JustinJee.com in “About Me” section.

I love to travel, visit new places and friends. Nevertheless, i am afraid of flying and airplanes. I feel very uncomfortable when the plane takes off, during the flight, i have an awfull time till the plane lands. How to overcome my fear of flying in airplanes?

Well what is it about airplanes that makes you uncomfortable? If you don’t trust the pilot, there isn’t much to worry about. Just about everything the plane does is automated. From taking off, cruising, even parts of landing are all done automatically without the pilot needing to do anything. Most of the time, the pilot is there for the ride just as you are. He is mostly only there to take control of the plane if there is an unnatural occurrence during the plane’s flight. If such a happening were to take place, it would be dealt with promptly and efficiently. You’d never even know something changed. Commercial airplane travel is still the safest method of long-distance travel. The planes that are built today are able to fly using only one engine, however, they are still equipped with two. Anytime a plane has a malfunction or error of some sort, the airline and plane manufacturers both work immediately to fix the problem to eliminate it from happening a second time no matter how small the problem was.

I hope this was helpful.
