This is a compilation of my short snippet videos short from Kowloon city under the approach path to Hong Kong’s Kai Tak airport in 1998. They were uploaded individually 2 years ago, but are much easier to watch this way. http://www.kaitak.tv

The Antonov An-225 Mriya,(THE WORLDS BIGGEST PLANE) (NATO reporting name: Cossack) is a strategic airlift transport airplane that was built by Antonov (ASTC). It was designed for the Soviet space program as a replacement for the Myasishchev M-4 ‘Bison’ for the purpose of carrying the Energia rocket boosters and to also be able to carry the Buran space shuttle in piggy-back mode much the same as the American Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The An-225 first flew on 21 December, 1988. Only one An-225 is currently in service. It is commercially available for carrying ultra heavy and/or oversize freight. It can carry up to 227 metric tons (250 short tons) of cargo. A second An-225 was partially built in connection with the Soviet space program but was never finished. This unit is finally nearing completion as of 2005. The construction of further units will depend upon demand for oversize cargolifting. At 600 metric tons, the An-225 is the world’s heaviest aircraft, although its wingspan is less than that of the “Spruce Goose”, Howard Hughes’ flying boat, which never flew more a single, short, low-altitude test flight. Both the An-124 and An-225 are larger than the C-5 Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the U.S. inventory. The An-225 is also larger than the Airbus A380. In November of 2004, FAI placed the An-225 in the Guinness Book of Records for its 240 records and overall outstanding aerial performance. The funniest 6 minutes you will ever see! Remember how many of these you have done!

QOTD: If you could spot at any airport what it be, and why?

This is technically Friday’s video but I won’t be around to upload it. So it’s going up now.

I need 6 features that we might see in the future (on airplanes) and so far I have thought of solar panels. I also need a picture, part of a picture, or a description of the plane’s looks. But please help as much as you can for the 6 features because I want this to be better than anyone else’s!

the 787 was going to have a shark fin tail and generally raked back features
but in the end boeing decided on the conventional tail
here is a pic of the shark fin tail
http://media.photobucket.com/image/787%20shark%20fin/Thorben81/7E7Dreamliner_1.jpg
no telling if future aircraft may use the design

another big concept that’s been around since around 2004 is the blended wing concept
http://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2009-04/planes-trains-and-sueprsonic-spaceships
but it hasn’t yet taken shape partly because of dwindling air travel and airbus’ negative experience with the A380 which can only land at the few airports equipped for it.

New seat and cabin concepts are also emerging for first class and coach. Some really nice designs that increases comfort and room, without reducing passenger capacity by more than a few seats. Unfortunately, airlines won’t be pulling aircraft off flights for a few days just to install these for your comfort.
one possible design already being implemented by Delta:
http://www.popsci.com/files/imagecache/article_image_large/files/articles/cozy2.jpg

other features will be less visible from the outside. I’m talking about possible better winglets, more efficient wings, more efficient engines, and other not-so-visible implementations that will improve one aspect or other of the flight.

Email stated: Airbus $200,000,000. TITANIC? This new Airbus 340-600, the largest passenger airplane ever built, sits just outside its hangar in Toulouse , France without a single hour of airtime.

Enter the Arab flight crew of Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT) to conduct pre-delivery tests on the ground, such as engine run-ups prior to delivery to Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi .. The ADAT crew taxied the A340-600 to the run-up area.

Then they took all Four engines to takeoff power with a virtually empty aircraft. Not having Read the run-up manuals, they had no clue just how light an empty A340-600 Really is.

The takeoff warning horn was blaring away in the cockpit because they had All 4 engines at full power. The aircraft computers thought they were trying to take off, but it had not been configured properly (flaps/slats, etc..)

Then one of the ADAT crew decided to pull the circuit breaker on the Ground Proximity Sensor to silence the alarm. This fools the aircraft into thinking it is in the air.

The computers automatically released all the Brakes and set the aircraft rocketing forward. The ADAT crew had no idea that this is a safety feature so that pilots can’t land with the brakes on.

Not one member of the seven-man crew was smart enough to throttle back the engines from their max power setting, so the $200 million brand-new Aircraft crashed into a blast barrier, totaling it.

The extent of injuries to the crew is unknown due to the news blackout in the major media in France and elsewhere.

WOW! This is a pretty cool video of a 777 & 747 SP landing in a cross winds down in Brazil. This little item shows the Boeing factory determining the demonstrated crosswind landing limits on the 777 and the 747SP. The engineers make educated guesses, but then the test crews have to go actually prove the numbers. They sneak off to Brazil to do these tests at a certain remote BAF airbase famous for its continual atrocious crosswinds…Should the gear sideloads be excessive and fold one up, there is nobody there to take nasty pix for the Airbus guys to wave around in the press.

This is some good piloting in getting these planes down. It comes close to “incredible”…. tire change anybody????

If you haven’t seen these it’s pretty amazing to watch planes of this size crab walking in on a landing. I can hear the whole crew and the pilot just yelling “Yeehaaaa” at the top of their lungs.

Note the rudder action on landing.

PS: I suspect that the pilot and co pilot are wearing Depends.
