The first step in traveling, in the air, with a pet is to make sure that they are even allowed. Certain pets are allowed to be on airplanes, but that does not mean that all airlines will allow it. On that day, you may want to arrive at the airport a little bit earlier than recommended. This will help to ensure that you could quickly straighten out a problem, without having to miss your flight, should one arise.
When you and your pet arrive at the airport, whether it be early or not, you will both be required to go through airport security. Your pet will be required to pass through a metal detector, just like everyone else. If you are using a pet carrier, it is also likely that your pet carrier will be subject to examination. This examination most commonly includes being sent though the x-ray machine with your carryon luggage; however, it is important to note that your pet will not have to go through the x-ray machine; the metal detector should be enough.
As previously mentioned, not all airlines allow their passengers to fly with their pets, even in the cabin or below deck. That is why it is advised that you determine whether or not your pet can fly with you, ahead of time. In addition to different air travel rules, you may also find that some airlines charged extra fees for pet passengers. In the event that you are charged, you will be notified of this charge ahead of time.

What are the rules for flying internationally with my pet rabbit?
I will be traveling to Lagos, Nigeria in 2010. I will be over there at least one month. I did not want to leave my bunny baby with a sitter or board her for that length of time. I wanted to know what the rules are for international travel with a pet rabbit and if she will be allowed to ride with me in the cabin? Thank you in advance for your help.
You will have to check with customs of Nigera as far as importing pets..

And you will also have to check with the airline.. pets are not typically allowed in-cabin for international flights.

Well too be honest you may not be allowed to take him/her. When my friend moved to australia she wasnt allowed to take her two pet bunnys. So i wud reccomend you ask a travel agent about it or when you book your flight you will need to find out more. I am no expert, I am 13, I have a rabbit and wud know how you feel about leaving your bunny in the care of someone else. I wouldn’t want it to happen so I do hope you solve this isssue and that you have a good travel to Lagos when you go

Second, I think you should board the bunny at home and hire a pet sitter to feed/water it every other day, should cost no more than $20 a visit. Good luck!

You need to check with the government of Nigeria, your country and the airline. You might be able to bring the rabbit to Nigeria, but not back easily. Pets are usually restricted for in cabin travel on international flights, and rabbits are rarely allowed in cabin anyway.
Flying and travel is very stressful for rabbits. The pressure change, noise and unfamiliar surroundings can cause the rabbit to get sick or even die. Getting the equipment you need (cage, food etc) there can be hard and shipping will be very expensive. I highly doubt there are any vets there who know how to properly treat a rabbit in case something does happen.
It will be easier on your rabbit to higher a pet sitter. The rabbit will be in her own home and someone will come feed her, play with her and clean up every day. Some people will let you bring her to their home so she can get more care.
If you were planing on moving to Nigeria, it would make more sense to bring the rabbit, but just a vacation is not a good reason to risk your rabbits life.

depends on customs and what air line you use plus the customs at the country you are flying to. If its just a trip and you will be flying back I would just reccommend to get someone to look after your rabbit cause you could get to your destination and it could be a diff story than you were told and you could get your rabbit taken away by customs or the airport. I would be very careful.
