This is a bit weird but i was thinking about that air france crash today n i was wondering what do you think people felt like before it crashed do you reckon they knew what was going on? I just don’t know how to comprehend what people would feel like i know its best not to think about it though:S
The way I look at it is- with sudden loss of Cabin pressure above 10,000ft you have less then 30 seconds before unconsciousness in a stress-full situation- It causes a fatal condition called Hypoxia – lack of oxygen to the brain. As most flights are flying above FL25 (above 25,000 ft) you aren’t going to notice much at all. Even with oxygen bags dropping should you happen to get it on within that 30 seconds, If the aircraft is losing altitude as drastic height in a crash situation the fuselage will be very unstable shaking and most likely throwing air bags out of reach, The Negative G force you will feel will leave you in able to make conscious thought anyhow as your blood will rush to your head causing grey or black out. (Hence why NASA pilots are subject to strenuous forces and pressure suits before they are allowed to lift off for acclimatisation).
To me, this is a comfort that anybody in a serious plane crash would have known little about what was happening as they ‘fell from the sky’. As a passenger Jet is so heavy and travelling at such speed it falls at an incredible rate anyhow at thousands of feet per minute. Should anyone be unlucky enough to not suffer from the conditions above- they wouldn’t know about it for long anyway.
Terrible situation and my heart is out to everyone on the Air France flight. Rest in Peace.
I would be utterly terrified

In some instances, it happens so fast that there’s no time to think. In other instances, it happens slow enough that victims have time to call their loved ones before dying.
In all instances, I bet there are brief moments of panic, regret, despair, terror, prayer, disbelief, etc…

Crapping their pants would spring to my mind….unimaginable unless you were ever in that situation.
I know from flying to Florida when we hit some really bad turbulence and the plane dropped for a few seconds – that was enough for me to think – CRAP!

I was just thinking about that this morning when I was reading the update…. It sucks that the debris that they found wasn’t from the plane
. It’s hard losing a family member…I’m sure it’s even harder wondering where the hell they crashed…. or if they even did crash. If they are all dead… or if there are any survivors…. My heart goes out to all those families

I like to hope that on the way down most die quickly and peacefully of heart attacks out of the sheer terror. unimaginable…..i can’t begin to try to empathise

Hopefully we’ll never find out. One thing we can be sure of is that they would have known. Planes fly at about 35,000 feet, or to put it another way 6 miles above the ground. Anything falling from that height is going to take quite a few minutes to hit ground level.
I would imagine if you’re inside a plane in that situation you will be fully aware of what is about to happen.

Not much to worry about as they were dead soon after they felt bad, if they did, and so will not be able to have nightmares, flashbacks or have any other worries about it.
It is often the memory of a bad situation that causes problems and for these poor people this will not be an issue.

I think the situation in known. There were crashes with survivors. There were also incidents when people were sure the plane would crash. So there are reports of such situations. This is not something like "Nobody came back from death so we don’t know how it is".
If the plane flies high, even if there is time, many people will hope the plane won’t crash
On 25 may 2002 a plane flying from Taipei to Hong Kong disintegrated in midair while flying at 35,000 ft. so the passengers had plenty of time to realize the situation while sky diving without a parachute.

It depends on what exactly happened. As mentioned before, some instances passengers don’t have time to think before the inevitable happens. If they do have time to think, the reactions will vary from person to person.

I’m a pilot.
It depends if the plane broke apart in mid air they would have died almost instantley. If the plane was still intact when it hit the ocean then the passengers would have more than enough time to cr@p themselves. It could have even ben a bomb as the fuel sick they recovered wasnt from the jet but just from a passing boat so hey probbaly would have died instantley if it was a bomb.
If the aircraft broke apart=death in 30 seconds or under
If the aircraft hit the ocean in one piece=Time to think about death

They would probably be very scared, but often there’ s not enough time during a crash to comprehend what’s going on. In the case of the Air France flight, they probably didn’t know what was happening until it was too late. By that time, they were probably either dead or unconscious anyway.
